Cleaning Your Car After Head Lice
After the initial stress of head lice is over and the lice have been removed, parents often begin to stress over the cleaning process. How do they make sure they won’t go home and get it back? Is their home infested with head lice now? Do they need to buy new things? What are they supposed to do about their car, is it lingering with head lice?
Is Everything Infested?
The good news is you don’t need to buy anything new! Head lice can live for a short period of time without a human host but generally isn’t more than 24-48 hours. Most household surfaces and items can be cleaned, including your vehicle. While it is important to take steps to clean after an infestation, no drastic measures need to be taken. For the most part a simple house cleaning will do the trick! You can find our suggestions for cleaning your home and personal belongings here!
How to Clean Your Car
Cleaning your vehicle after head lice can seem a like a daunting task, but it really isn’t bad at all. Child car seats are the number one item to take care of, as they are the most likely to come in direct contact with hair. While it can be a pain it is recommended to take them apart and launder any cloth pieces. Vacuum the rest of the car seat thoroughly, then wipe it down with disinfecting wipes or spray. As for the car’s interior, cloth seats can be vacuumed being sure to get into any cracks or tight spots. Leather seats are easy as lice tend not to stick to these surfaces, but it is best to still wipe them down. Use a lint roller or sticky tape to reach places the vacuum can’t and go over the entire car. Remember lice can only live for 24-48 hours without a human host so while it is important to clean after lice it is also important not to over stress.
